Borgarfjörður day tour and Into the glacier of Langjökull

10 hoursModerate
18 reviews
Join us on this amazing day tour on and into a glacier in Iceland

This thrilling tour takes you to Borgarfjordur, the center of a lot of the Icelandic Sagas, for some exploration, natural wonders and relaxation. Here you’ll see untamed landscapes that will help bring Viking history to life, beautiful waterfalls and the second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull.

There we will visit the Ice tunnel and get inside the glacier itself, seeing the layers of the ice and snow and learn how this affects the daily life of the locals and how the melt water from this glacier is the source of the fresh tap water that the people in Reykjavik enjoy every day.

We will leave the busy Ring Road behind us and  head towards Deildartunguhver. On our way there, you’ll be able to look out for the fast-flowing glacial rivers and waterfalls carving through the lava fields.

Let us know when you want to join us on this epic quest!

  1. We did the Many Glacier Boat tour across SwiftCurrent Lake and Lake Josephine. This is a very popular cruise that sells out early, and they seemed to have a waiting list of people for every boat that goes out. But on a clear day it’s a gorgeous trip, with the beautiful blue lakes surrounded by mountains, definitely worth it if you can get the reservations. We even saw a bear up in the hills on the way back! At the end, there’s a small beach where you can hang out and wait for your return boat, and from there you can see a glacier up in the mountains. The staff is incredibly nice and friendly, and happy to answer questions.

Something to keep in mind is that this tour is made up of a boat cruise followed by a steep quarter mile hike to the second lake, and then another boat cruise. I’d heard that the quarter mile was paved, so I took a chance and brought my knee scooter. It turns out the pavement is pretty broken up by now, so my husband carried the knee scooter and I mostly hobbled. I wouldn’t recommend trying to hike the quarter mile with a wheelchair or a walker, but I think crutches might work okay if you’re strong. But keep in mind that the second boat has to wait until all the passengers from the first boat have arrived, so you can’t help but feel a lot of pressure to get to that second boat quickly.

  2. Wonder tour leaving from Lake Macdonald lodge. The boat was clean and Captain Casey was excellent! Very informative history of the surrounding area and closeup view of 2 bad eagles

  3. We did the 3:00 tour on Lake Mcdonald. I dont recall the guides name but she sounded like she was reading a script. Someone asked a question and she said she would answer that later. The tour is supposed to be 1 hr but it lasted 45 min because they were squeezing in a “special tour” before the 5:00 tour. Its painful to see the burned areas. Too bad they arent allowed to plant trees
